Field Opacity and Decoupling: Labor Standards in Global Supply Chains

I argue that the lack of improvements in private voluntary regulation of labor conditions in global supply chains in many industries is a function of organizational decoupling (both policy-practice decoupling and practice-outcomes decoupling). I demonstrate, through several field studies, how behavioral invisibility, practice multiplicity and causal indeterminancy result in practice-outcomes decoupling in opaque institutional fields such as private regulation of labor standards in global supply chains.
